$0.70 on the dollar has GOT to go!
...But maybe we'll keep the high heels...

This is my personal anti-shrine to all those who swear "I'm not a feminist, but..."

Odds are, if you've said those words, you're a (gasp!) feminist, honey. The great thing about being feminist is that you can have both--get the equality, keep the femininity (if you want). This is all about being able to have the freedom to decide who we want to be, after all. Don't like the current "feminist image"? Get out there and change it! Here are some websites to get you thinking.

Resources:

  • Camille Paglia--While I may not agree with everything she has to say, dissent is important for any movement, and some of her ideas are very good. Check out her writings and decide for yourself.
  • Ms. Magazine is the bastion of the feminist movement, and not to be overlooked. Breaking ground and rebelling against advertisers who demanded cooking articles and make-up ads, Ms. has been ad-free and reader-supported since July 1990. Ms. is often old-guard feminism; strong, outspoken, intellectually challenging, but occasionally a little narrow in its focus on upper and middle class women's concerns.
  • For a new-guard take on the feminist movement, check out Bust or Bitch Magazine.
  • National Organization of Women (NOW)--another not-to-be-overlooked old guard institution. I have essentially the same praise and critique of them as Ms.
  • Some suggested reading (all additional suggestions are welcome as well)

Feminist 'Zines & Websites:

  • Femina!
  • Girlie Style:"a woman's place is in the homepage." A well done 'zine as well as a great jumping-off place to other awesome webpages by women.
  • yOni--yOni web~zine is a celebration and exploration of the many faces of the Feminine.
  • Heartless Bitches International--'nuf said.

Popular Culture:

  • Guerrilla Girls--they're artistic, they're outspoken, they're fantastically outrageous!
  • Ladyslipper: a non-profit organization whose intention is to heighten awareness of women artists and musicians. One of their greatest publications is The Ladyslipper Catalog, the world's most comprehensive catalog and resource guide of recordings by women. Now if only I had more $$...
  • At last! Barbie's getting a makeover! It's a step in the right direction, at least. Now to do something about those size 3 shoes and all those heels...
  • That's not to say that wearing heels can't be a feminist statement. Check out Lady Chabilis.
  • Wonder Woman comics claimed my childhood imagination (wouldn't we all want superstrength, a pair of magic bracelets that stop all bullets and a lasso that makes people tell the truth?) and I have recently discoved and become a hard-and-fast fan of Tank Girl. Here are some of my favorite links of both:
